Biography
Neri de Kramer is a cultural and applied anthropologist specializing in the study of consumption behavior. Her primary research area is the United States. She has an M.A. from the University of Amsterdam and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her dissertation analyzed the socially reproductive food behaviors of middle-class parents raising children in Philadelphia. de Kramer has a culinary background and one of her key interests is human food practices and the process by which consumers form and express identities through food.
A second research area is inclusive pedagogy and the institutional practices that promote a sense of belonging and success for Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native, mixed race, first generation, and low-income students at the University of Delaware.
She teaches a wide variety of undergraduate courses on topics including food and culture, material culture, American culture, visual anthropology, and family studies. In addition to teaching, she works in industry as a food and beverage consultant and freelance ethnographer.
