Continuing as a Major Scholar of Middle Atlantic Archaeology for Over 40 Years
BodyText1
At the virtual Middle Atlantic Archaeology Conference on Saturday, March 27, 2021, Dr. Jay F. Custer's contributions to archaeology in the region were recognized with the MAAC Lifetime Achievement Award. His impact began in 1975 when he attended the first MAAC meeting. Since then, Custer has been a leader in setting methodology and theory for archaeology in Delaware and the surrounding states. He is one of the most prolific writers and most cited scholars of archaeology in the region. His book, Prehistoric Cultures of Eastern Pennsylvania, remains a foundational text essential to students and professionals. Importantly, he has also been a mentor of students and a supporter of the amateur archaeological community. His long involvement in all major areas of Mid-Atlantic work includes establishing cultural resource management plans for Delaware, researching issues from the Paleoindian through historic times, and the treatment of modern Indians.
