Teaching and Research Interests
Professor Custer's scholarly interests center on Native American archaeology of Eastern North America, with an emphasis on the Mid-Atlantic region and Delmarva Peninsula. This involves the study of the technology, arts and crafts of Native North American societies. Professor Custer has conducted research at more than 150 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and conducted archaeological surveys of more than 1500 sites in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey. He has developed archaeological and ethnohistorical research programs in association with the Delaware Indian Tribe of Oklahoma and the Nanticoke Indian Tribe of Delaware. Professor Custer teaches classes on modern Native American cultural issues, images of North American and Mesoamerican Indians in popular culture, and modern American Anabaptist cultures (Amish, Mennonite, Brethren).
